Sports medicine and performance
UQ VETS Equine Specialist Hospital offers a world-class exercise testing program for athletic horses.
We'll dynamically test your horse to determine the underlying cause(s) of your horse's reduced performance or to evaluate your horse's heart, lung or upper airway function.
Testing your horse
We'll exercise your horse on our equine treadmill under simulated race conditions including a full gallop or pace.
Our comprehensive treadmill testing protocol evaluates your horse's lung, upper airway and heart during maximal exercise and includes:
- dynamic upper-airway endoscopy
- telemetric ECG
- arterial blood gases
- stress echocardiogram
- pulmonary function testing (open plethysmography)
- post exercise broncho-alveolar lavage (BAL)
- pre- and post-exercise serum muscle enzymes
- high-speed gait evaluation.
We may also observe your horse while you ride it or take it over jumps in our arena.
Evaluating your horse
At UQ VETS, our equine specialists work collaboratively to:
- evaluate your horse during testing and
- address your horse's musculoskeletal, cardiac or respiratory systems if they are involved.
