Steven joined UQ VETS Equine Specialist Hospital after holding international positions and practicing at Veterinary Hospitals in the USA (University of Pennsylvania) and South Africa (University of Pretoria). Steven completed his residency at the University of Pennsylvania and became board certified in large animal surgery in 2008.  He specialises in orthopaedic surgery, reconstructive surgery,  lameness, and scintigraphic imaging.

Steven joined UQ VETS as a surgeon in 2010 and views the capacity to undertake a variety of types of surgery as the standard to be able to deliver the best standard of treatment and post-operative care. His longest surgery to date was 12 hours on an extremely complex case and to save a valuable animal. He said, “Very few places can keep a horse alive for that length of time and as surgeons, we need the talented and experienced anaesthesiologists to do that…. It is a privilege to be part of that team”.

Steven considers his role and responsibility in teaching veterinary students to be very important and is a perfectionist about standards expected and promoted.  He is proactive in improving teaching methods to ensure students are comfortable in surgical situations. He is also active at the professional level, consulting, exchanging knowledge and skills in cross disciplinary approaches to continually improve surgical techniques with industry colleagues.
