UQ case study for treating forelimb lameness

Our specialists diagnosed marked bone contusion (bruising) of the left front middle phalanx with concurrent inflammation in the coffin joint.

Bone bruising in this location is common in jumping horses due to the concussive forces placed on the short pastern bone during landing.

These injuries do not necessarily result in a change to shape or anatomy of the bone and are impossible to identify with traditional imaging such as X-ray and ultrasound.

It can be very painful (similar to when you hit your thumb with a hammer and get bleeding under the nail) but respond favourably to appropriate rest.

We used a standing MRI exam to:

• identify the specific injury that Da Da Des Brimbles sustained
• assess that the pathology was completely resolved before Da Da Des Brimbles returned to competition
• ensure Da Da Des Brimbles received appropriate rest and rehabilitation without a long period away from competition.

Da Da Des Brimbles showed a good response to rest and rehabilitation.  

He was rechecked with standing MRI three months later and before he resumed showjumping. The MRI showed the bruising had completely resolved. He was back on track and jumping well before the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Without a definitive diagnosis, the initial periods of rest would have been insufficient for the pathology to resolve in this patient. Ask your vet if standing MRI could help your horse, or contact us for more information.
