Advanced farriery
UQ VETS Equine Specialist Hospital's Master farrier is highly skilled in the latest techniques for corrective shoeing of performance and pleasure horses.
Our Master farrier, Craig Jones, provides general or remedial farrier services by consultation. He also attends to horses hospitalised for foot conditions, working closely with specialist veterinarians on corrective shoeing and surgical or medical management for every patient.
Common foot conditions
Our Master farrier treats and manages foot conditions in horses after diagnosis or investigation by our specialist veterinarians.
Our veterinarians use advanced diagnostic imaging such as digital direct radiography (DDR) and Queensland's only 3D contrast computed tomography (CT) to provide comprehensive diagnostic work-ups and guide treatment.
The conditions we treat include, but are not limited, to:
- laminitis (founder)
- lameness
- hoof cracks
- keratoma
- hoof wall resection
- other hoof surgery.
Our Master farrier delivers the individual treatment plan developed by our veterinarians to treat your horse's condition.
Treating your horse's laminitis
UQ VETS internal medicine and surgery specialists collaborate with our Master farrier to manage mild and severe laminitis cases. We take a holistic approach to identify:
- the underlying cause
- medication
- dietary changes
- weight control
- if surgery is required.
We routinely use hoof radiographs for tailored trimming, shoeing and hoof balance. We also use CT, bone-scans, and standing MRI to diagnose and manage cases, if required.
Laminitis research
UQ VETS specialists research laminitis to improve treatment and outcomes for horses.
Through our world-leading research, we’ve developed the most accurate tests to diagnose:
- Equine metabolic syndrome (EMS)
- Pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID).
